In 1901, in the Boston Cooking School Magazine, was a recipe from Julia Davis Chandler. She started with 3 thin slices of bread, freshly made Peanut paste and currant or crab-apple jelly. In the 1920’s when the manufacturer added sugar to the mix of peanut butter, (this made children like it better) and made it easier to get for all the PB & J sandwiches came into their own. During the Great Depression, this sandwich was a significant help to people with good protein and inexpensive. While trying to find out which Jelly is most used in the Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich, it is a toss-up. Strawberry is the new flavor of those who love the Sandwich. Where Grape Jelly is from old school and still has a good following! Others go for Hot with Pepper Jelly or some other fruit. Some, not even Jelly, Honey, Bananas. Celery.
